4-17-24 Western side rivers and streams. The fishing on the west side is starting to heat up with these unseasonably warm temperatures. Steelhead fishing is winding down on the rivers but, drop back steelies can still be found in the lower stretches. These fish are very aggressive and will readily take, spinners, cranks, and spawn imitations.
Brown trout fishing is also hot in the rivers. Michigan has 4 types of stream classifications. Some are open possession and some are closed to all fishing currently. Rivers that are open right now are showing good water flow and temperature right now. Browns can be caught using spinners, cranks, and spawn imitations also.
The pier heads are proving to be the real hot spot now. Steelhead, lake browns, coho, and walleyes are being caught. The walleyes and Steelhead are particularly aggressive after returning to the big lake after their annual river spawn. Swim baits and deep running cranks are the best baits during the low light hours for these post spawn walleyes. Set rods with spawn sacs are the ticket for structure cruising browns, steelies, and coho.
April 27th represents opening day for all trout, pike and walleye on Michigan streams and lakes.
